While we were in Port Alberni, British Columbia, we decided to take a quick trip out to see if the Martin Mars water bombers were in town. Mike Fitton and I had both seen the same Discovery Channel show Mighty Planes, featuring the above flying boat. Mike knew the old aircraft was based near Port Alberni. It turned out that the plane was indeed at the base on Sproat Lake, about 10 minutes west of Port Alberni. Unfortunately for us we were about 2 days early for the opening of the base to the public. So, we’ll have to come back another time to see the second largest flying boat (after The Spruce Goose) and the largest commercially operated flying boat in the world.
