When you hear Sukhoi you think of a fast sleek fighter jet racing across the sky and you are correct. Sukhoi latest fighter, the Su-35
is a 4++ generation fighter with fifth generation technology. While Sukhoi has a long and proud military aircraft history they have a civil project that has been exciting to watch. It is the Sukhoi Superjet 100 that I am focusing on today.
The Soviet Union was well established in aircraft manufacturing but since dissolution in 1991 the consequences have been catastrophic. The Superjet 100 (SSJ100) is a part of the big turn around in Russian Aircraft Manufacturing, a project that begun in 2000. The Superjet was first flown in May of 2008, had Russian certification in January 2011 and just received certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in February of this year. This aircraft has two variants, the 75 and 95, each with an LR, or Long Range version. With options of 68-83 passengers, in the 75, and 86-103, in the 95, depending on seating configuration this is the 100 seat aircraft market that is seeing large growth. Competitors include the Embraer E series and Bombardier’s CRJ. So far the orders have been rolling in, with 168 as of September 2011. With EASA certification I expect more to come as the Superjet aims to take on its Western competitors.According to ATO:
The Superjet 100 is currently the most important and successful civil aircraft program of the Russian aerospace industry.
